Before Linking a Budgeting App to Your Bank

Questions to resolve about account access, household visibility, data retention and disconnection before connecting a budgeting app.

No blanket “safe” label can tell you what a specific app, connection method and household setup will expose. Before linking, identify the data requested, who can access it and what happens when you disconnect. This guide does not certify any provider's security.

Identify the connection you are authorizing

Read the authorization screen and the provider's current explanation. Record which accounts and data categories are requested, whether the connection can initiate actions or only retrieve information, and which company provides the connection. Do not infer those permissions from a marketing phrase such as “bank-level security.”

Check who else can see the imported data

A household member's access is a different question from the app provider's access. Confirm the actual rule before inviting someone. The corrected Monarch review illustrates why a filtered view must not be mistaken for a private account.

Plan a small verification step

If you decide to proceed, compare imported balances and transactions with your own records and note discrepancies. This is a suggestion for your own assessment, not a test we claim to have conducted. Never post credentials or full transaction histories in a public support thread.

Know how to stop

Locate the current instructions for revoking access, disconnecting an institution and deleting stored information. Ask the relevant provider what each action does. Review the privacy checklist for the questions to document. A manual budget remains an option when you do not want a connection.
